Description: Prof. Carol Wilson, of Washington College, will talk about an enslaved woman who sued for her freedom in 19th-century New Orleans, on the grounds that she was not black but a German immigrant kidnapped as a child. Who was Sally Miller, and what became of her? What does her case tell us about race and gender in pre-Civil War America? Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the History Department, the African American Studies Program, the Center for the Humanities, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
